16/12/13 Finishing Production Skills Edit

With mere day's to go until the deadline, my group met up to finish the edit of 'The Grass Isn't Always Greener'. we met up at 3PM to finish the sound edit, with Tom Noonan being our sound editor, syncing it up to the final visual cut that I edited.

The process took between 2- 2 and a half hours. We made sure that everyone was happy with the final visual edit, and did some minor colour correction tweeks, we ended up playing through the audion track, with Tom handing us the headphones to have a listen through.

It was tougth to sound edit, because pro tools did not work on the mac that we were editing the project on, and there was no other mac avalible in the room, so Tom had to make do with what final cut could offer him: he could lower and up the levels of the sound, but any effects like reverb couldn't be done. So taking this into account i think the sound edit went very well.

We went through the clips second by second, frame by frame, toensure that every sound was there. e.g if a pencil was being picked up or a cup was being placed down, we would make sure a sound was there. This lead to some funny moments, because each of us was addiment that every sound would be heard, and nothing looked out of place, so much so that when I asked to look at the ful lpiece after al lthe sounds were placed in, I couldn't the cup being put down on the table, so I immediately paused it and said 'where is the cup being put down sound?. Tom corrected this and when I listened through again, not only did I hear the sound, but every single sound was in the right place.

It did not really hit us until I said it was good, and Tom looked at me and said 'Have we actually finished this?' and then it hit us that after all this effort, after about 2 weeks of the film being 'nearly done' we had finished it.

Now all that needs doing is the opening and closing credits, which Jake will do before he puts the file onto DVD.

So, after alot of hard work by the whole team, we have finished the project, and are setting up a power point to present our work on.

Production Skills edit session

After our experimental film crit, we got down to the production skills, with the intention of finishing it. We pieced togeather the video, Though I was late arriving so the audio was worked on by Tom Luke and Jake before i got there. Once I was there I stuck to the drill of following Jake's rougth cut and pieced the clips togeather with that. At the end we realised we had finally got a full finished piece on the timeline as seen below.

Finished Timeline of Project

Once I had done the compleated timeline Tom Noonan had ago at syncing up the sounds to the video, but unfortunately, pro tools was not working, and Tome needed to go back and do it at home, so we exported a copy of the work and put it on his hard drive.

So this left Me with the task of colour correcting and the first thing jake wanted me to do was the Edale part, where Sam walks through Edale. Before I go into what i did, here are two still images of the colour corretion filter.

My instructions for the Edale montage was to up the green level's to help emphasize the country feel. I did that and ended up giving the film a green tint making the film seem less studenty and I am quite pleased with how it turned out. The screen shots below show the difference colour correction made to the contry side.

After

I also colour corrected both parts of the Cafe, though slightly different, due to the fatct that before the edale scene the protagonist is supposed to feel claustraphobic by the noise, so shadows were increased and the image ws made darker and gloomyer. After the Edale scene we altered the colours but mage the image sharper and brighter to establish the characters acceptence.

Below are two mre xamples of before and after colour correction.

Now we have a 90% finished project and we are planning to have it done on Monday after Tom has done the sound track and we colour corrrect the sitting down on the bench section. Looking back knowing it's nearly done I look on this project with pride and can't wait to see what it looks like on a DVD.

To finishe off here are two screen shots, one showing a few sounds that are going into the piece and one showing the full session after the days editing was complete.

Edale Project, editing

On the 6/12/13 I once again was called upon to do my editor job. As with the Cafe shoot, Jake did a rougth edit of the edale footage, and I based it on that. However Jake left out the middle part so it went straight from the hill top to the end montage. His edale edit came to 52 seconds and the full project came to 2 minutes 42 seconds.

My cafe edit came to 1 minute 45. So I had an extra 1 minute and 15 seconds in which to fit the Edale half of the piece and that meant I had 23 seconds more to work with, however taking the extra time Jake left out I had only brought an extra 5 seconds. Timing was criticle, and tight editing was needed. once I imported all the shots (which came to over 100 different shots over the course of 52 minutes of footage) I edited it as best as I could and ended up with a tiny section, in which to fit the middle part.

This was where editing got tricky, and with jake sat giving me feedback as i worked it took longer, because I was not only exercising what I felt was right, I was also trying to interprate what Jake wanted. For example he wanted a horizon shot sped up, which I did to 1000%, and he wanted a horizon shot to over lay another shot so the two shots could be seen on screen. So I put it on top of one of his reaction shot's but had it fade in then  out so it didnt appear choppy. I put the effect on 0, then placed another marker on about 40, then 50, then back to 0. This meant that the effect faded into the shot then faded back out. It took me the best part of half hour to do that one effect, purely because I was unclearof hot to acheive this effect. Now i have done it I can remember it for future refference should I need the effect.

There was also the task of cutting down clips and removing stuff that may not have been essential so we could make at least 20 seconds of space for the central bit of Jakes character walking through Edale. Jake required it to be a few reaction shots and a few nature shots but not so much that we were advertising Edale. So I mixed the clips and added cross fades to allow transition between the shots, to allow passage of time and a dreamlike status. In the end we got a full 3 minute film, but weatherit's the end of my editing duty's remains to be seen. So, what I have done is  ore likely to be considered a rougth edit, so Tom Noonan has something to work with sound wise, because without the audio, this project won't be as good as it needs to be, and we wont be conveying the message, we are trying to get across.

In the meantime, me and Victor are meeting up to plan our experimental film now our audio is done and dusted.

Edale reshoot 4/12/13

our re shoot of the Edale footage came today. The whole crew, (Me, Tom Noonan, Jake Richardson, Luke Parry, and Tom Slater) met in the trainstation at the pre arranged time and caugth the qurter past train to Edale.

We traveled to where we filmd beforehand and went up one of the hill's, wich was a tougth enought exersize without the equiptment, so when we got to our location, we were tired, but felt as though we acheived something. However, it was chilly when we got there, and the weather did not improve as it just got colder and at the higher autitude, it felt colder. We had trouble setting up tripods and ended up doing alot of hand held camera work. I unfortunately couldn't get a camera out so there are no edale production stills, however it allowed us to focus more on the filming side.

Thought Tom Noonan got much of the camera work, we allchipped in and got abit of experience on the camera. As well as following the storyboard, we recorded some cutaway shots, such as a stream, some branches, trees, hilltops etc. to give that country feel.

We are intending to edit the footage Friday, and once its all complete we will be looking to adding sounds.

Production Skills- Cafe Scene edit 29/11/13

To make sure my group was ahead of schedual, I texted jake last night to bring in the cafe footage so I could edit it.

When we got to the edit suite, Jake said he had picked out the best clips and did a rougth edit himself, so I didn't have to look at the story board. The video showed me in what order he wanted the clips and the rougth time scale after transfering thevideo files and sounds as well as thepre edited video to my desktop, jake left me to it.

When editing, I added in certain bits like the three clock shots quickly cut togeather, and slowed down two shots (one being when he turns his head before all the cut away shots, and the other being when he closes his eyes). I thought the effect created did well to support the piece, the slow mo head turn being a starting point for the quick cuts and the eyes closing helping bring an end to this scene rather than just some sudden cut. once sound gets included it can be where the sound cuts off.
Below is the finished cut, I have exported it as I could notfit it onto my memmory stick otherwise so, so far its just the clips we are using that I have included in the piece.

At the end I repeated a shot to make up for the continuity for the writting, as in jakes edit the writting went from one line to a whole paragrpah with in a standered cut.

Film Analysis (Gondry: The Chemical Brothers- Let forever be)

This music video, is one that relies highly on editing. The motion of the character going from one place to another is a very tricky thing to do. What the director has one is put a character at the end of a shot in a certain pose, and then put them in that same pose at another location to allow this seemless flow of time.

Giving it a look, from a filmmakers point of view, it is plainly obvious that a fair amout of green screen and blue screen will have been used to replicat this woman into multiple clones, moving in sync.

The choreography is very well done, as it flows with the time of the music and makes the cuts and effects look more surreal.

As I am editing the Edale film, I would like to have that sort of editing that makes the images flow from shot to shot. Though of course the editing and filming will not be as complex as what is seen in the video, it provides me a standeed on cutting and making any errors absent from the work.

Short Film research/analysis (Virgin Media Shorts)

Out production skills project has to be between 2-3 minutes long. Another source that sets the same rule of 2-3 minute short films, are Virgin Media Shorts. So, naturally, it is a good source for researching techniques and styles of local, student film makers, to see what they could come up with as they are in a similar situation to us.

I have analysed two virgin media Shorts.

Touch

The first film I looked at is a new one called Touch. Its run time is 2 minutes 36 seconds including the brief virgin media shorts intro.

The film is about how touches lead a relationship. it opens with a man and woman meeting and shaking hands, the it goes through the motions of the relationship with the constant symbol of holding hands in scenes. At the end the man has died and a painter is at the woman's house when she lets her grand daughter in. They introduce themselves and the painter offers his hand to the woman, who shakes it, giving the impression that the cycle is starting over again.

Their is no dialogue in the opening couple of minutes, and relies on a musical track, that is soothing, and some what romantic. the audio stops when the man dies but kicks in again when the painter offers his hand. This implies that the music sound track is singling the start of another relationship. It stopped when the elderly man died because that meant the cycle between them two had now ended. But now it seems to be starting again the music begins again.

This is a good soundtrack piece and works very well with the visuals. With our plan for the Edale project being without dialogue , this is a perfect example of how we can make our piece work with just an atmos backing track to reinforce the piece.

Homey

Homey is an interesting short. It is about a childrens playground game in which some kids have to get from one fence to the other without the other kids in the middle catching you. The way it is smoothly edited and the atmos track of a childrens playground makes the film interesting to watch, even though its basically 2 and a half minutes of a kid running from one side of the playground to the other, with about a minute and a half of tht being stoon at the start getting ready to run.

Their is also a sense of acheivement when the kid reaches the otherside, and iyou get that feeling of joy, like a kid feels when they have won at a game. This effects the audience, and creates a connection between them and the protagonist, and is a fitting ending for the short.

Again this smooth editing of little movements flowing togeather will help me take influence when editing the little movements in the cafe scene. Also the atoms works well with it so this could be a useful tool of refference for Tom who is doing the sound editing.

Edale project- Coffie Shop Scene

Today the whold group got togeather to film the coffie shop scene as planned. Thugh I helped with a few shots, the majority of camera work was done by Ton Noonan, and I mainly took production stills observed and kept a log sheet of the shots takes (even though I had to find out myself what the time on the camera was, as people kept rushing to the next take.

Before Igo into a summary of the days shoot here are the production stills taken today, (I am not in any as I took the photos).

I apologise for the long gap, but the images at the end show the completed log sheet at the end of filming.

The filming took place between half 9 when we were set up to wrapping up about 11:45AM. During the filming we had to be creative for the shots, and ended up improvising a decent ending, how ever more is needed to be done as we have not got any audion matched to the footage at this present moment. Noonan did the job very well acting as a sort of Director/ Camera Operator and Director of Photography, yet i feel as it did notgive me and Luke much oppertunity to try out the camera  and we ended up being bystanders for the most part, but giving our input to shots. admittedly thought in a major production there will be times where crew are bystanderes. with the tripod it took three of us to set up a couple of shots, due to the confined spaces of the cafe.

We followed the shots in order but skipped the cut away shots until the end of filming, and for the most part the shots came out succesful however there are a couple of continuity and focus errors in a couple of shots that I will have to try and fix in post.

Jake has all the footage on his hard drive so I will ge to editing it when I can, hopefully this week, so we are at least on top of things.

We thanked the manager for allowing us to film and we are reletively pleased with the days work.
